DIY Petal Dust

American Confections

Ingredients you will need:

Vodka or Everclear

Food coloring of your choice ( I like to use gel for making my petal dust)

Flat Bristle Paint brush

You want to start by placing 1/8 tablespoon of food coloring in each bowl.

Mix in 2 tablespoons of vodka and use the flat paintbrush to remove all the clumps. You want to make sure ALL of your clumps are mixed into the liquid.

Add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and MIX, MIX, MIX!

Some people swear by confectioners sugar, I have played around with this recipe for years and the cornstarch provides a much brighter color.

Let the liquid dry overnight. The next morning your bowls will contain a soupy liquid mixture. Using a spoon mix it together and add additional cornstarch to achieve the color you want. Be careful to not add to much of the cornstarch as this will dilute your color. I recommend not adding over 2 tablespoons.

If you mixture is still wet let it dry completely. If you want to speed the process up you can place your dust into the oven for 45 minutes on its lowest setting. Make sure your bowls are oven safe :)

Once your petal dust is completely dry you will see lots of clumps. Fear not! All you have to do is use a Mortar and Pestle to break these clumps up. I have also used a coffee bean grinder for a really quick fix. Both will provide you with clump free Petal Dust.

And viola! Your own Petal Dust!

Store your dust in a glass or plastic bottle.
